The Redtail Shark, scientifically known as Epalzeorhynchos bicolor, is a striking and energetic freshwater fish that adds both colour and personality to any aquarium. Known for its sleek, jet-black body contrasted with a vibrant red tail, this fish is a popular choice among aquarists seeking a bold centrepiece for their tank. Originally hailing from the rivers and streams of Thailand, the Redtail Shark is admired not only for its stunning appearance but also for its active and somewhat territorial behaviour. While they require a bit more attention to tank mates and environment, their unique look and lively presence make them a rewarding addition to well-maintained aquariums.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Epalzeorhynchos bicolor
  • Size: Typically grows up to 4-6 inches in length
  • Diet: Omnivorous; enjoys a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetables such as zucchini and spinach
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; best kept with similarly sized, robust fish that can handle their territorial nature
  • Habitat: Prefers tanks with plenty of hiding spots, caves, and open swimming areas
  • Care Level: Moderate; suitable for aquarists with some experience in managing semi-aggressive fish

Why Choose Redtail Shark?

The Redtail Shark is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a visually striking and active fish that adds a dynamic element to their aquarium. Its bold colouration and sleek shape make it a standout in any tank, while its active swimming and territorial behaviour add excitement and interest. Redtail Sharks are relatively hardy, making them a good option for those with some experience in fish keeping. However, it’s important to carefully choose tank mates and provide an appropriate environment to ensure a harmonious tank. Their need for a well-structured habitat with plenty of hiding spots makes them particularly well-suited for larger, planted aquariums.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 72°F - 79°F (22°C - 26°C), pH between 6.5 - 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep your Redtail Shark healthy and active.
  • Feeding: Redtail Sharks are omnivorous and should be provided with a balanced diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets or granules, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. They also appreciate vegetable matter, such as blanched zucchini or spinach, which can help keep them healthy and vibrant.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank with plenty of caves, rocks, and hiding spots to help reduce territorial aggression. Redtail Sharks are active swimmers, so ensure there is ample open space for them to move around. A tank of at least 55 gallons (200 Litres) is recommended to provide enough space for their territorial nature.
  • Behaviour: Redtail Sharks are known for their territorial behaviour, especially towards fish of similar size and shape. They do best in a community tank with similarly sized, robust fish that can handle their semi-aggressive nature. Avoid keeping them with other shark-like species or overly timid fish, as this can lead to stress and conflict.

Perfect for Larger, Well-Planned Tanks:

Redtail Sharks are an excellent choice for aquarists with larger tanks who want to add a bold, energetic, and visually appealing fish to their collection. Their distinctive appearance and active behaviour make them a rewarding addition to well-maintained aquariums.
