Why Choose the Addis Butterflyfish (Chaetodon semilarvatus)?

The Addis Butterflyfish is a captivating choice for aquarists seeking a large, elegant species to enhance their aquarium. Its vibrant yellow colour and graceful swimming style create a stunning focal point, while its peaceful temperament ensures compatibility with similarly calm tank mates. Although not entirely reef-safe, it can coexist in carefully planned reef setups. The Addis Butterflyfish is perfect for aquarists with the experience and space to accommodate its needs, offering unmatched beauty and charm.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are crucial for this species' health.
  • Feeding: Addis Butterflyfish thrive on a varied omnivorous diet. Offer high-quality marine pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 2-3 times daily in small portions.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank of at least 125 gallons with plenty of live rock for grazing and open swimming spaces. Include hiding spots such as caves and crevices to reduce stress and mimic their natural reef environment.
  • Behaviour: This species is peaceful and coexists well with other non-aggressive fish. It is not entirely reef-safe and may nip at corals or anemones, so caution is advised in mixed setups.

Perfect for Large Display Tanks:

The Addis Butterflyfish is an ideal addition to large marine aquariums, offering both beauty and tranquillity. Its vivid colouration and elegant movements make it a show-stopping centrepiece for fish-only setups or carefully curated reef tanks.
