Why Choose the African Blenny (Meiacanthus mossambicus)?

The African Blenny is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a peaceful and visually appealing fish for their marine aquarium. Its unique colouration and active behaviour make it a standout addition, while its adaptability and low-maintenance care requirements ensure it thrives in a variety of setups. Known for its peaceful temperament, the African Blenny is ideal for community tanks, coexisting well with other reef-safe species. Its natural behaviour of perching and exploring makes it a fascinating fish to watch.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to ensure a healthy environment.
  • Feeding: African Blennies are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality marine flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 1-2 times daily in small portions.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank of at least 30 gallons with plenty of live rock for hiding, grazing, and exploration. These blennies are naturally curious and enjoy perching on rocks or corals. Ensure the tank has a secure lid, as they are known to jump.
  • Behaviour: African Blennies are peaceful and adapt well to community tanks. They are active swimmers but also spend time perched on rocks, creating a dynamic and interesting display in the aquarium.

Perfect for Reef and Community Tanks:

The African Blenny is an excellent addition to reef and community tanks, offering both beauty and functionality. Its active and peaceful nature, coupled with its adaptability, makes it a great choice for aquarists of all levels.
