The African Red Eye Tetra is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a vibrant, active, and hardy fish to their aquarium. Its bold red eye, combined with a sleek silver body and dynamic swimming behaviour, makes it a standout addition to any tank. These tetras are known for their strong schooling instinct, which not only enhances the visual appeal of the aquarium but also promotes their well-being. Their peaceful nature ensures they coexist harmoniously with a variety of other community fish, making them a versatile choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 72°F - 82°F (22°C - 28°C), pH between 6.0 - 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep your African Red Eye Tetras healthy and vibrant.
- Feeding: African Red Eye Tetras are omnivorous and should be provided with a balanced diet that includes high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A varied diet will help maintain their vibrant colouration and overall health.
- Tank Setup: Provide a tank with plenty of live or artificial plants to offer shelter and create a natural environment. African Red Eye Tetras enjoy open swimming spaces, so ensure there is ample room for them to school and explore. A tank of at least 30 gallons (115 Litres) is recommended to accommodate a small school.
- Behaviour: African Red Eye Tetras are social fish that thrive in groups of at least six individuals. Their schooling behaviour adds a beautiful, coordinated movement to the tank, and their active nature ensures they are always on the move. They are peaceful and make excellent tank mates for other similarly sized, non-aggressive species.
Perfect for Community and Planted Tanks:
African Red Eye Tetras are an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a peaceful, active, and visually appealing fish to their community or planted tank. Their striking appearance and lively schooling behaviour make them a captivating and rewarding addition to any well-maintained aquarium.
