Aiptasia Eating Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus)
The Aiptasia Eating Filefish, scientifically known as Acreichthys tomentosus, is a fascinating and highly beneficial marine fish known for its ability to control and eliminate Aiptasia anemones in reef aquariums. This unique fish is recognised for its mottled greenish-brown colouration and angular, compact body, which allows it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. Native to the shallow reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Aiptasia Eating Filefish is a peaceful and hardy species that makes a practical and interesting addition to reef tanks. Its utility in controlling Aiptasia, a common pest in marine aquariums, makes it a favourite among reef enthusiasts.

Why Choose Aiptasia Eating Filefish?
The Aiptasia Eating Filefish is an excellent choice for reef aquarists dealing with Aiptasia infestations. These pest anemones can quickly overrun a tank, but this filefish is one of the most effective natural solutions for keeping them in check. Beyond its practical utility, the Aiptasia Eating Filefish is an intriguing and peaceful addition to marine tanks, exhibiting curious behaviour and unique movement. While primarily kept for its appetite for Aiptasia, this fish can adapt to a varied diet once the pest is under control, making it a long-term addition to your aquarium.
Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 72°F - 78°F (22°C - 26°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.026. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to maintain optimal water quality.
- Feeding: The Aiptasia Eating Filefish is known for its natural diet of Aiptasia anemones, but it will also accept other foods once Aiptasia populations are depleted. Offer a variety of frozen foods, such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine pellets, as well as algae-based foods.
- Tank Setup: Provide a tank with plenty of live rock to offer hiding spots and grazing opportunities. A tank of at least 30 gallons (115 Litres) is recommended for a single filefish. While generally reef-safe, this species may nip at certain corals or other invertebrates, so monitoring is essential in mixed setups.
- Behaviour: Aiptasia Eating Filefish are generally peaceful and do well in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. However, they may exhibit curiosity toward corals or other small invertebrates, especially if underfed. They are active grazers and often exhibit entertaining, curious behaviour.
Important Considerations:
While the Aiptasia Eating Filefish is an effective natural control for Aiptasia, it may occasionally nip at soft corals, zoanthids, or other invertebrates. Ensure a balanced diet and monitor interactions in reef setups to minimise potential issues.
Perfect for Reef Pest Control:
The Aiptasia Eating Filefish is a practical and visually interesting solution for controlling Aiptasia in reef aquariums. Its natural pest-removal abilities and peaceful demeanour make it a valuable addition for aquarists looking to maintain a balanced and healthy marine environment.
