The Angelfish, scientifically known as Pterophyllum scalare, is one of the most iconic and admired species in the aquarium hobby. Known for their tall, triangular bodies, flowing fins, and graceful swimming patterns, Angelfish bring an air of elegance to any aquarium. Originating from the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of the Amazon Basin in South America, these fish are loved for their striking appearance, which can include a variety of colour patterns such as silver, black, gold, and marble. Angelfish are not only beautiful but also relatively easy to care for, making them a popular choice for both novice and experienced aquarists.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Pterophyllum scalare
  • Size: Typically grows up to 6 inches in length and 8 inches in height (including fins)
  • Diet: Omnivorous; enjoys a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; best kept with other similarly sized, peaceful to semi-aggressive fish
  • Habitat: Prefers tanks with plenty of vertical space, plants, and gentle water flow
  • Care Level: Moderate; suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining community tanks

Why Choose Angelfish?

Angelfish are an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a striking, elegant, and moderately easy-to-care-for fish to their aquarium. Their tall, thin bodies and flowing fins make them a dramatic centrepiece in any tank. Angelfish are social creatures that can be kept in small groups or pairs, but they also do well on their own. Due to their size and potential for semi-aggressive behaviour, they are best kept with other similarly sized fish that can hold their own without being overly aggressive. With proper care, Angelfish can live for up to 10 years, providing years of enjoyment and beauty.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 82°F (24°C - 28°C), pH between 6.5 - 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep your Angelfish healthy and thriving.
  • Feeding: Angelfish are omnivorous and should be provided with a balanced diet that includes high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. Offering a variety of foods will help enhance their colouration and overall health.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank with plenty of vertical space, as Angelfish are tall swimmers and enjoy exploring different levels of the aquarium. Include live or artificial plants, especially tall ones, to create a natural environment and offer hiding spots. A tank of at least 30 gallons (115 Litres) is recommended to accommodate their size and potential territorial behaviour.
  • Behaviour: Angelfish can exhibit territorial behaviour, especially during breeding. It's important to monitor them when introducing new tank mates and ensure that the tank is large enough to provide sufficient space. They are best kept with other semi-aggressive or peaceful species that are not small enough to be seen as prey.

Perfect for Larger Community and Planted Tanks:

Angelfish are an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a majestic, active, and visually stunning fish to their larger community or planted tank. Their elegant appearance and graceful swimming behaviour make them a captivating and rewarding addition to any well-maintained aquarium.
