Why Choose the Australian Pink Face Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus)?
The Australian Pink Face Wrasse is a versatile and stunning addition to reef and marine aquariums. Its bold colouration and constant activity make it a visual standout, while its natural pest-control abilities, such as eating bristle worms and flatworms, contribute to maintaining a healthy tank ecosystem. This wrasse is known for its peaceful temperament and adaptability, making it compatible with a variety of other reef-safe fish. Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential for the health of this active species.
- Feeding: Australian Pink Face Wrasses are carnivorous and require a varied diet of frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. They will also graze on live copepods and amphipods in mature tanks. Feed 2-3 times daily in small portions.
- Tank Setup: Provide a tank of at least 50 gallons with plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. A sandy substrate is essential, as these wrasses bury themselves for protection while sleeping or when startled. Ensure the tank is covered, as they are known jumpers.
- Behaviour: This species is peaceful and works well in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. While they are reef-safe, they may occasionally eat small invertebrates like snails or crabs, so care should be taken in mixed setups.
Perfect for Reef and Community Tanks:
The Australian Pink Face Wrasse is an ideal choice for reef and community aquariums, offering a stunning visual display and natural pest control. Its active swimming behaviour and bold colours make it a captivating addition that thrives in well-maintained setups.
