Why Choose the Black Longnose Tang (Zebrasoma rostratum)?
The Black Longnose Tang is a rare and sophisticated choice for aquarists looking to add a unique and dramatic fish to their marine aquarium. Its deep black colouration adds a sense of mystery and elegance, while its algae-grazing habits help keep the tank clean and balanced. Though it requires a spacious tank and careful tank mate selection, the Black Longnose Tang’s beauty and functionality make it a rewarding addition to large reef or fish-only setups.
Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 82°F (24°C - 28°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. High water quality is essential for this species, requiring efficient filtration and regular water changes.
- Feeding: Black Longnose Tangs thrive on a diet rich in algae and seaweed. Offer high-quality marine flakes, spirulina, nori, and other algae-based foods. Supplement their diet with occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp or brine shrimp. Feed small portions multiple times daily.
- Tank Setup: Provide a tank of at least 125 gallons with ample live rock for grazing and open swimming spaces. Strong water flow helps replicate their natural habitat and promotes activity. Ensure the tank is well-structured to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
- Behaviour: This tang is generally peaceful but may become territorial toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish, especially in smaller tanks. It coexists well with other peaceful marine species and is best introduced as the last tang in the aquarium.
Perfect for Advanced Reef and Display Tanks:
The Black Longnose Tang is an exceptional addition to large reef and display aquariums, offering both visual sophistication and practical benefits. Its unique appearance and algae-grazing abilities make it a valuable and captivating choice for experienced aquarists.
