The Clownfish, scientifically known as Amphiprion ocellaris, is one of the most recognisable and beloved marine fish in the aquarium hobby. Often referred to as the "Nemo fish," this species is renowned for its vibrant orange body, striking white bands bordered by black, and its playful and engaging behaviour. Native to the warm, shallow reefs of the Indo-Pacific, A. ocellaris is a hardy and peaceful fish that thrives in a variety of marine aquarium setups, including reef tanks. Clownfish form symbiotic relationships with anemones in the wild, but they can adapt well to life without one in the home aquarium.

Why Choose A. ocellaris Clownfish?

The Ocellaris Clownfish is an excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels due to its hardy nature, vibrant colouration, and engaging personality. This species is peaceful and gets along well with other non-aggressive tank mates, making it ideal for community marine aquariums. Its adaptability allows it to thrive in both anemone-hosted and anemone-free environments. Watching these iconic fish dart among rock structures or host an anemone is a captivating experience, making them a favourite addition to any marine aquarium.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 82°F (24°C - 28°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep your Clownfish healthy.
  • Feeding: Ocellaris Clownfish are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality marine pellets or flakes, along with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 1-2 times daily in small portions.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank with plenty of rock structures for hiding and exploring. While anemones are not required, they can form a symbiotic relationship with species like the Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor). A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended for a pair of Clownfish.
  • Behaviour: Clownfish are generally peaceful but may become territorial once they establish a home within the tank. They are often kept in pairs and can exhibit fascinating behaviours, including spawning in mature systems.

Perfect for Reef and Marine Community Tanks:

Ocellaris Clownfish are a versatile and hardy addition to marine tanks, making them ideal for reef setups and community aquariums. Their vibrant colours, unique swimming style, and compatibility with other peaceful species make them a centrepiece in any marine aquarium.
