The Convict Tang, scientifically known as Acanthurus triostegus, is a striking marine species known for its bold black vertical stripes on a silvery-white body, resembling a prison uniform—hence the name "Convict" Tang. Native to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, this peaceful yet energetic tang is an excellent algae grazer, helping to maintain a balanced and clean environment in your aquarium. Its hardy nature, schooling behaviour, and constant foraging make it a fantastic addition to reef and community tanks.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Acanthurus triostegus
  • Common Name: Convict Tang, Convict Surgeonfish
  • Size: Typically grows up to 8 inches in length
  • Diet: Herbivorous; thrives on a diet of algae, seaweed, and algae-based foods
  • Temperament: Peaceful; compatible with other non-aggressive fish but may become territorial with other tangs
  • Habitat: Suitable for large reef or fish-only tanks with plenty of live rock for grazing
  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate; ideal for aquarists with some marine experience

Why Choose the Convict Tang (Acanthurus triostegus)?

The Convict Tang is a fantastic choice for aquarists looking for an active, algae-grazing fish that brings movement and elegance to their tank. Its peaceful nature makes it an excellent choice for community tanks, while its constant foraging helps control nuisance algae. Unlike some other tang species, the Convict Tang is more tolerant of its own kind and can often be kept in small groups if introduced at the same time.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Ensure strong water flow and excellent filtration to support their active lifestyle.
  • Feeding: Convict Tangs are herbivorous and require a diet rich in algae. Offer seaweed sheets, spirulina-based foods, and natural algae growth from live rock. Supplemental feeding with high-quality marine pellets or flakes will help meet their nutritional needs. Feed 2-3 times daily.
  • Tank Setup: A tank of at least 125 gallons is recommended for a single Convict Tang, with plenty of live rock for grazing and open swimming space. If keeping multiple Convict Tangs, a larger tank is necessary to reduce aggression.
  • Behaviour: Peaceful yet active, the Convict Tang thrives in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. It may display territorial behaviour toward other tangs, especially those with similar body shapes, so careful selection of tank mates is advised.

Perfect for Reef and Large Community Tanks:

The Convict Tang is a beautiful and functional addition to reef and community tanks, offering algae-grazing benefits, peaceful behaviour, and constant activity. Its striking appearance and lively swimming make it a favourite among marine hobbyists.
