The Tripod Filefish (Tripodichthys spp.) is a rare and extraordinary marine species, instantly recognisable by its dramatically extended pelvic and caudal fin rays that allow it to perch upright—resembling a tripod. Its slender, elongated body and cryptic colouration help it blend seamlessly with sandy and rubble substrates, where it often remains motionless. Native to deeper, silty reef zones across the Indo-Pacific, this elusive filefish is seldom seen in the aquarium trade and is best suited to experienced aquarists or public displays.

  • Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on small benthic invertebrates, live or frozen foods
  • Temperament: Peaceful and slow-moving; best housed with calm, non-aggressive tank mates
  • Habitat: Suitable for species-specific or peaceful fish-only tanks with sandy bottoms and low-moderate flow
  • Care Level: Advanced; recommended for experienced aquarists or specialist exhibits

Why Choose the Tripod Filefish (Tripodichthys spp.)?

This species is a true conversation piece, making it a superb addition for aquarists and institutions seeking to showcase rare or unusual marine life. Its slow, deliberate movement and “tripod” stance create a striking and memorable visual, while its calm nature allows it to thrive in peaceful surroundings. Due to its delicate build and specialised care requirements, the Tripod Filefish is best kept in a tank tailored to its needs.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C), pH between 8.1 – 8.4, and salinity of 1.023 – 1.025. High water quality and minimal fluctuations are essential.
  • Feeding: Offer small meaty foods such as enriched brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and live blackworms. Feed 2–3 times daily in smaller amounts.
  • Tank Setup: A tank of at least 75 gallons is recommended. Provide a soft sandy substrate for perching, gentle water flow, and minimal bright lighting. Avoid sharp rockwork or aggressive tank mates.
  • Behaviour: Incredibly peaceful and slow-moving. This species prefers a calm environment and should be housed away from fast, boisterous, or nippy fish. It may spend long periods motionless in a characteristic “tripod” pose.

Perfect for Public Aquariums or Experienced Collectors:
