Acanthastrea Corals, commonly referred to as "Acan Corals," is a visually striking LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral known for its vibrant colours and robust structure. With fleshy polyps that display a wide range of colours, including reds, oranges, greens, blues, and purples, Acanthastrea Corals are a favourite among reef enthusiasts looking to add bold, eye-catching pieces to their tanks. These corals are relatively hardy and are well-suited for both beginners and experienced aquarists alike, making them a versatile choice for any reef setup.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Acanthastrea spp. Echinata
  • Lighting: Moderate; thrives under LED, T5, or metal halide lighting, but can adapt to a variety of lighting conditions
  • Water Flow: Low to moderate; prefers gentle currents that allow the fleshy polyps to expand fully
  • Placement: Middle to lower regions of the tank; adaptable to various placements, including on rock work or substrate
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; forms dense, colourful colonies that can spread and fill in spaces over time
  • Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; while generally peaceful, Acanthastrea Corals have short sweeper tentacles that can sting nearby corals if placed too closely

Why Choose Acanthastrea Coral?

Acanthastrea Corals are celebrated for their vivid colours and its ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. Its fleshy polyps and bold appearance make it a focal point in any reef aquarium. While they do require moderate care, Acan Corals are relatively forgiving, making them an excellent choice for aquarists who are still developing their coral-keeping skills or those looking to add a vibrant, hardy coral to their collection. Their semi-aggressive nature means they can hold their own in a mixed reef environment, but careful placement is required to avoid potential conflicts with other corals.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters:

Temperature - 24°C-26°C

Salinity - 1.022-1.026

Alkalinity - 8-9dKH

Nitrate - 2-15ppm

Phosphate - 0.03-0.10ppm

Calcium - 450ppm

Magnesium - 1400ppm

  • Feeding: Acanthastrea Corals are primarily photosynthetic, but they benefit greatly from supplemental feedings with small meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral-specific foods. Feeding regularly can enhance their growth and colour vibrancy.
  • Placement Considerations: While Acan Corals are adaptable to different lighting and flow conditions, they should be placed with enough space to avoid stinging other corals. They do well in shaded or partially shaded areas of the tank, especially if higher lighting is used elsewhere.

Perfect for All Reef Enthusiasts:

Acanthastrea Coral is an ideal choice for aquarists looking to add a burst of colour and texture to their reef tanks. Its hardy nature and striking appearance make it suitable for a wide range of reef environments, from beginner setups to more advanced coral collections.
