The Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum) is one of the most highly coveted tang species in the marine aquarium trade, prized for its stunning jet-black body covered in brilliant white spots, resembling a starry night sky. Native to the remote waters of the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around Madagascar and Mauritius, this rare and elegant species is a true showpiece for advanced marine aquarists. With its active swimming behaviour and natural algae-grazing tendencies, the Gem Tang is both a visually striking and functional addition to large reef and fish-only aquariums.

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; best housed with similarly tempered fish
  • Habitat: Suitable for large reef or fish-only tanks with ample live rock for grazing
  • Care Level: Advanced; best suited for experienced aquarists due to its rarity and specific care needs

Why Choose the Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum)?

The Gem Tang is a dream species for serious marine aquarists looking to add a truly rare and mesmerising fish to their collection. Its dazzling spotted pattern and graceful swimming style make it a centrepiece in any well-maintained aquarium. Aside from its breathtaking beauty, this species is an excellent algae grazer, helping to maintain a clean and balanced environment. Due to its high value and sensitivity to stress, it requires a spacious, stable, and well-filtered aquarium with minimal aggression from tank mates.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain pristine water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. High-quality filtration and strong water movement are essential.
  • Feeding: Gem Tangs require a diet rich in algae. Offer seaweed sheets, spirulina-based foods, and naturally occurring algae growth from live rock. Supplement with high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feed 2-3 times daily.
  • Tank Setup: A tank of at least 180 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space. Include live rock for grazing and structured rockwork to create natural territories and hiding spots.
  • Behaviour: Semi-aggressive, particularly towards other tangs. It is best introduced as the only tang in smaller tanks or carefully introduced to multiple tang species in larger setups. Compatible tank mates should be chosen carefully to avoid territorial disputes.

Perfect for Reef and Large Community Tanks:

The Gem Tang is a rare and breathtaking addition to large reef and community tanks, offering both algae control and dynamic movement. Its striking colouration and active nature make it one of the most desirable species for marine enthusiasts worldwide.
