The Heniochus Butterflyfish, scientifically known as Heniochus acuminatus, is a stunning and elegant marine fish often referred to as the "Bannerfish" due to its long, flowing dorsal fin. With its striking black, white, and yellow colouration, this species is a showstopper in any aquarium. Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, the Heniochus Butterflyfish is known for its peaceful temperament and adaptability, making it a popular choice for both reef and fish-only setups. While it closely resembles the Moorish Idol, the Heniochus Butterflyfish is significantly hardier and easier to care for, making it an excellent alternative for aquarists.

Why Choose the Heniochus Butterflyfish (Heniochus acuminatus)?

The Heniochus Butterflyfish is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a visually stunning and active fish to enhance their marine aquarium. Its flowing dorsal fin and bold colouration create a dramatic display, while its peaceful nature makes it compatible with a variety of tank mates. Though it may occasionally nip at corals, it is generally well-suited for larger reef setups or fish-only systems. This hardy species is a fantastic option for aquarists who want the elegance of a Moorish Idol with the ease of care of a butterflyfish.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 82°F (24°C - 28°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are crucial for maintaining optimal water quality.
  • Feeding: Heniochus Butterflyfish are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet that includes high-quality marine flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 2-3 times daily in small portions.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank of at least 75 gallons with ample swimming space and plenty of rockwork or coral for exploration. Ensure the tank has a well-balanced environment to support their active and curious nature.
  • Behaviour: This species is peaceful and works well in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. They can be kept singly or in small groups, provided the tank is large enough to accommodate their social and active behaviour.

Perfect for Large Marine and Display Tanks:

The Heniochus Butterflyfish is a versatile and eye-catching addition to large marine aquariums, offering beauty and activity. Its flowing fins, striking colours, and peaceful nature make it a standout choice for aquarists with spacious setups.
