The L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco, a striking and rare variant of the Panaqolus genus, is highly prized by aquarists for its vibrant coloration and bold patterns. Native to the Rio Xingu in Brazil, this pleco stands out with its vivid orange and black tiger-like stripes, making it a true showpiece in any aquarium. The L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco is a smaller pleco species, known for its peaceful nature and wood-eating habits, making it a unique and interesting addition to a well-maintained freshwater setup.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Panaqolus sp. (L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco)
  • Size: Typically grows up to 4-5 inches in length
  • Diet: Herbivorous; primarily feeds on driftwood (lignin), supplemented with high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and occasional vegetables like zucchini and cucumber
  • Temperament: Peaceful; highly compatible with other non-aggressive fish, ideal for community tanks
  • Habitat: Prefers tanks with plenty of driftwood, caves, and hiding spots
  • Care Level: Moderate; suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining specialised diets and stable water conditions

Why Choose L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco?

The L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco is a must-have for pleco enthusiasts and aquarists looking to add a vibrant and rare species to their collection. Its bright orange and black striped pattern is visually striking, making it a focal point in any tank. This pleco is known for its wood-eating habits, so providing ample driftwood is essential to its health and well-being. Its peaceful nature and relatively small size make it a perfect addition to medium to large community tanks, where it can coexist harmoniously with other non-aggressive species.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 77°F - 84°F (25°C - 29°C), pH between 6.5 - 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to mimic the clean, oxygen-rich waters of their natural habitat.
  • Feeding: The L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco is primarily a wood-eater (xylophage) and requires a diet that includes driftwood in the tank. Supplement their diet with high-quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, and fresh vegetables like blanched zucchini, cucumber, and sweet potato. Regularly replace or add new pieces of driftwood as they consume it.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank with plenty of driftwood, rocks, and caves to replicate their natural environment and to give them places to hide and forage. A well-planted tank with dim lighting or shaded areas will help them feel more secure.
  • Behaviour: The L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco is generally nocturnal and prefers to be active during the evening and night. Providing a calm and stable environment with minimal disturbance will encourage natural behaviour.

Perfect for Specialised and Community Tanks:

The L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a rare, colourful, and behaviourally unique pleco to their tank. Its wood-eating habits and peaceful nature make it a valuable addition to both specialised setups and well-established community aquariums.
