Lamprologus ocellatus "Orange," commonly referred to as the Orange Ocellatus, is a captivating and vibrant shell-dwelling cichlid species from the rocky and sandy shores of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Known for their striking orange coloration and bold personality, these small cichlids are highly prized by aquarists who enjoy observing unique behaviours in their fish. The Orange Ocellatus is famous for its interaction with empty snail shells, which they use for shelter, territory, and breeding. Their small size, coupled with their fascinating behaviours, make them an excellent choice for aquarists looking to create a specialised Tanganyikan aquarium.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Lamprologus ocellatus "Orange"
  • Size: Typically grows up to 2 inches in length
  • Diet: Omnivorous; enjoys a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia
  • Temperament: Territorial but generally peaceful; best kept in species-specific tanks or with other compatible Tanganyikan cichlids
  • Habitat: Prefers sandy substrates with an abundance of empty snail shells, which they use for shelter and breeding
  • Care Level: Moderate; suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining stable water parameters

Why Choose Lamprologus Ocellatus "Orange"?

The Orange Ocellatus is a remarkable addition to any aquarium, offering both striking coloration and engaging behaviour. These cichlids are well-known for their territorial nature and their use of snail shells as both homes and breeding sites. Watching them interact with their environment, defending their shells, and raising their young is a fascinating experience that adds depth to the aquarium hobby. Their small size makes them suitable for smaller tanks, and their relatively easy care requirements make them accessible to intermediate aquarists interested in exploring the unique world of shell-dwelling cichlids.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.0 - 9.0, and hard, alkaline water to replicate their natural habitat in Lake Tanganyika.
  • Feeding: Provide a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients.
  • Tank Setup: Orange Ocellatus thrive in tanks with a sandy substrate and an abundance of empty snail shells, which they will use for territory and breeding. A well-established tank with stable rock formations can also provide additional hiding spots and territory boundaries.
  • Tank Mates: Due to their territorial nature, Orange Ocellatus are best kept in species-specific tanks or with other small, compatible Tanganyikan cichlids. Avoid keeping them with larger or more aggressive species that could outcompete them for space and resources.

Perfect for Tanganyikan and Specialised Shell-Dweller Tanks:

Lamprologus ocellatus "Orange" is an ideal choice for aquarists looking to create a vibrant and behaviourally interesting Tanganyikan tank. Their unique use of shells and their bold personality make them a standout species that will provide endless fascination for both novice and experienced cichlid keepers.
