Why Choose the Lipstick Tang (Naso lituratus)?

The Lipstick Tang is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a unique and functional fish to their marine aquarium. Its bold markings, peaceful nature, and algae-grazing behaviour make it both a visually striking and practical addition to large tanks. Due to its active swimming habits, this species requires a spacious environment with strong water movement and a high-quality diet to thrive.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Strong filtration and high oxygenation are essential for this active species.
  • Feeding: Lipstick Tangs are herbivorous and require a diet rich in algae. Offer seaweed sheets, spirulina-based foods, and naturally occurring algae within the tank. Supplement with high-quality marine pellets or flakes. Feed 2-3 times daily.
  • Tank Setup: A tank of at least 180 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space. Include plenty of live rock for grazing, as well as open areas for free movement. Strong water flow is beneficial for replicating its natural habitat.
  • Behaviour: Generally peaceful, but may become territorial towards other tangs, especially those of similar shape. Best introduced as the only tang in smaller tanks or carefully managed in larger systems with compatible tank mates.

Perfect for Reef and Large Community Tanks:

The Lipstick Tang is a visually stunning and functional addition to large reef and community tanks, offering both algae control and graceful swimming behaviour. Its vibrant colouration and engaging personality make it a favourite among marine hobbyists.
