Neolamprologus Multifasciatus 3cm
Neolamprologus Multifasciatus 3cm
Neolamprologus multifasciatus, affectionately known as "Multies," is one of the smallest cichlids in the world and a true gem for freshwater aquarists. Hailing from the sandy shores of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, these fascinating shell-dwelling cichlids are renowned for their intricate social structures and intriguing behaviours. Multies are characterised by their compact size, distinctive vertical stripes, and their unique habit of living in and around empty snail shells. Despite their small stature, they exhibit bold personalities and complex interactions, making them a captivating addition to any specialised Tanganyikan or community tank.
Key Features:

- Temperament: Territorial but peaceful within their group; best kept in species-specific tanks or with other compatible Tanganyikan cichlids
- Habitat: Prefers sandy substrates with numerous empty snail shells, which they use for shelter, breeding, and territory
- Care Level: Moderate; ideal for aquarists with some experience in maintaining stable water parameters
Why Choose Neolamprologus Multifasciatus?
Neolamprologus multifasciatus is a must-have for aquarists interested in shell-dwelling cichlids and their fascinating behaviours. Known for their strong territorial instincts, these tiny cichlids form colonies where they interact, breed, and defend their shells with surprising tenacity. Watching a colony of Multies is endlessly engaging, as they dig, move shells, and establish hierarchies within their community. Their small size makes them perfect for smaller aquariums, and their peaceful nature (within their own species) allows them to be kept in groups, where their social dynamics can truly shine.
Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.0 - 9.0, and hard, alkaline water. These conditions closely replicate their natural environment in Lake Tanganyika and are crucial for their health and well-being.
- Feeding: Provide a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops to support their nutritional needs and vibrant health.
- Tank Setup: Multies thrive in tanks with a sandy substrate and an abundance of empty snail shells, which they will use for territory, shelter, and breeding. Ensure the tank is well-filtered with minimal water movement, as they prefer calm waters where they can establish their colony.
- Tank Mates: These cichlids are best kept in species-specific tanks or with other small, non-aggressive Tanganyikan species. Avoid keeping them with larger, more aggressive fish that might disturb their delicate social structure.
Perfect for Tanganyikan or Specialised Shell-Dweller Tanks:
Neolamprologus multifasciatus is ideal for aquarists looking to create a unique and behaviourally rich aquarium. Their small size, complex social interactions, and fascinating use of shells make them a standout species for anyone interested in the diverse cichlid fauna of Lake Tanganyika.
