Why Choose Otocinclus Catfish?
Otocinclus Catfish are highly valued for their incredible ability to keep algae in check, making them a natural and effective part of your tank's clean-up crew. Unlike some larger algae-eaters, Otos are gentle and will not damage delicate plants, making them perfect for planted aquariums. Their small size and peaceful nature allow them to coexist harmoniously with a wide variety of tank mates, including other small fish and shrimp. Additionally, their social behaviour means they thrive best in groups, where they exhibit natural schooling behaviours that are both charming and beneficial to their well-being.
Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 72°F - 79°F (22°C - 26°C), pH between 6.5 - 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Otos are sensitive to water quality, so regular water changes and good filtration are important to keep them healthy.
- Feeding: While Otocinclus Catfish primarily graze on algae, their diet should be supplemented with high-quality algae wafers and blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach to ensure they receive balanced nutrition. It's important to monitor their food intake, especially in new tanks where algae may be scarce.
- Tank Setup: Otos thrive in well-planted tanks with plenty of surfaces for algae growth, such as live plants, driftwood, and rocks. Providing a variety of hiding spots and shaded areas will help them feel secure. A calm and stable environment with minimal fluctuations in water parameters is crucial for their well-being.
- Behaviour: Otocinclus Catfish are social creatures and should be kept in groups of at least 4-6 individuals. They are active during the day and can often be seen grazing on algae together, contributing to a healthy and vibrant aquarium.
Perfect for Planted and Community Tanks:
Otocinclus Catfish are an excellent choice for aquarists looking to maintain a clean, algae-free aquarium while also adding a peaceful and active species to their tank. Their small size, gentle nature, and beneficial algae-eating habits make them ideal for both planted and community setups.
