Why Choose the Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum)?
The Purple Tang is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a striking centrepiece fish for their marine aquarium. Its vibrant purple body and contrasting yellow tail make it a visual standout, while its algae-grazing habits help maintain a balanced and healthy tank. Though it may exhibit territorial behaviour, especially toward other tangs, its bold personality and active swimming make it a captivating addition. This species thrives in larger aquariums with plenty of space and is ideal for reef setups where it can graze on natural algae growth.
Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 82°F (24°C - 28°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential for keeping this active species healthy.
- Feeding: Purple Tangs are herbivorous and thrive on a diet rich in algae and seaweed. Provide high-quality marine pellets, spirulina, and nori sheets. Supplement their diet with occasional meaty treats like mysis shrimp or brine shrimp. Feeding small portions multiple times daily is recommended.
- Tank Setup: A tank of at least 125 gallons is required to accommodate the Purple Tang’s size and active swimming behaviour. Include plenty of live rock for grazing and open spaces for movement. Strong water flow replicates their natural habitat and supports their activity levels.
- Behaviour: Purple Tangs are semi-aggressive and may become territorial, particularly in smaller tanks or toward other tangs. They coexist well with robust tank mates and are best introduced as the last tang in the aquarium to minimise conflicts.
Perfect for Large Reef and Display Tanks:
The Purple Tang is a stunning and functional addition to large reef and display aquariums, offering both visual appeal and algae-grazing benefits. Its vibrant colouration and active nature make it a favourite among marine enthusiasts.
