Red Neck Severum 5-6cm
The Red Neck Severum, scientifically known as Heros severus, is a striking and vibrant cichlid that adds a splash of colour and personality to any freshwater aquarium. This variant of the popular Severum species is distinguished by its reddish-orange throat and neck area, which contrasts beautifully with its greenish-gold body. Known for their relatively peaceful temperament compared to other large cichlids, Red Neck Severums are an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a visually impressive yet manageable species to their tank.

Why Choose Red Neck Severum?
The Red Neck Severum is an ideal choice for aquarists seeking a bold and colourful centrepiece fish. Its unique red colouration around the throat area, combined with its relatively peaceful nature, makes it a standout addition to larger community tanks or cichlid-specific setups. Unlike many large cichlids, Red Neck Severums are known for their relatively docile behaviour, particularly when provided with ample space and a well-structured environment. Their impressive size and striking appearance make them a captivating addition to any aquarium, and their manageable care requirements make them accessible to intermediate aquarists.
Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 74°F - 82°F (23°C - 28°C), pH between 6.0 - 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to ensure optimal water quality for these cichlids.
- Feeding: The Red Neck Severum is omnivorous and should be provided with a varied diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, and peas. This balanced diet helps maintain their vibrant colours and overall health.
- Tank Setup: Provide a tank with plenty of space, ideally 55 gallons or larger, with hiding spots such as caves, rocks, and driftwood to offer shelter and territory. Red Neck Severums also appreciate a well-planted tank, but be cautious as they may nibble on soft plants. Floating plants or sturdy species like Java fern are good options.
- Behaviour: While generally peaceful, Red Neck Severums can become territorial, especially during breeding. Ensure there is ample space and well-defined territories within the tank to minimise aggression and provide a calm environment.
Perfect for Larger Community and Cichlid Tanks:
The Red Neck Severum is an excellent choice for aquarists with larger tanks who want to add a visually stunning and relatively peaceful cichlid to their collection. Their bold colours, manageable temperament, and impressive size make them a rewarding addition to well-maintained aquariums.
