Why Choose Serpae Tetra?
The Serpae Tetra is an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a vibrant, bold, and active fish to their aquarium. Their brilliant red colouration and unique black markings make them a visually striking addition to any tank. Serpae Tetras are known for their active schooling behaviour, which not only adds dynamic movement to the aquarium but also enhances their well-being. While they are generally peaceful, they can display semi-aggressive behaviour, particularly fin-nipping, if not kept in larger groups. Therefore, it's best to keep them in schools of six or more, with other similarly sized and active tank mates.
Care Tips:
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 72°F - 80°F (22°C - 27°C), pH between 6.0 - 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep your Serpae Tetras healthy and vibrant.
- Feeding: Serpae Tetras are omnivorous and should be provided with a balanced diet that includes high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A varied diet will help maintain their bright coloration and overall health.
- Tank Setup: Provide a tank with plenty of live or artificial plants to offer shelter and create a natural environment. Serpae Tetras enjoy open swimming spaces but also appreciate areas with plant cover where they can retreat. A tank of at least 20 gallons is recommended to accommodate a small school.
- Behaviour: Serpae Tetras are social fish that thrive in groups of at least six individuals. Their schooling behaviour helps reduce potential aggression, such as fin-nipping, especially when kept in larger numbers. They are best kept with other robust, fast-moving fish that can handle their active nature.
Perfect for Community and Planted Tanks:
Serpae Tetras are an excellent choice for aquarists looking to add a bold, colourful, and active fish to their community or planted tank. Their vibrant appearance and lively behaviour make them a captivating and rewarding addition to any well-maintained aquarium.
