The Sohal Tang, scientifically known as Acanthurus sohal, is a striking and iconic marine fish that commands attention in any aquarium. Known for its bold black and white horizontal stripes and vibrant blue edging along its fins, the Sohal Tang is one of the most visually captivating members of the surgeonfish family. Native to the coral reefs of the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean, this species is both active and robust. With its energetic swimming and territorial nature, the Sohal Tang is best suited for experienced aquarists who can provide the space and care it requires to thrive.

  • Temperament: Aggressive; requires careful consideration when pairing with other fish
  • Habitat: Suitable for large reef or fish-only tanks with ample swimming space
  • Care Level: Advanced; best for experienced aquarists due to its size and temperament

Why Choose the Sohal Tang (Acanthurus sohal)?

The Sohal Tang is a stunning centrepiece fish that brings both beauty and personality to large marine aquariums. Its bold stripes and vibrant colours make it a standout addition, while its algae-grazing habits help maintain a balanced ecosystem. This species is highly active and requires a spacious environment to thrive. Though aggressive towards other tangs and similarly shaped fish, its commanding presence and dynamic swimming make it a rewarding choice for aquarists with experience in managing large, semi-aggressive marine species.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 82°F (24°C - 28°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential for keeping this active species healthy.
  • Feeding: Sohal Tangs are primarily herbivorous and require a diet rich in algae-based foods, such as spirulina, nori, and seaweed sheets. Supplement their diet with high-quality marine pellets and occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp or finely chopped seafood. Feeding multiple small meals daily is recommended.
  • Tank Setup: A tank of at least 180 gallons is required to accommodate the Sohal Tang’s size and active swimming behaviour. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and open spaces for movement. Strong water flow mimics their natural environment and promotes health.
  • Behaviour: Sohal Tangs are known for their aggression, particularly towards other tangs and similarly shaped fish. They are best kept singly or in very large tanks with robust, dissimilar tank mates. Introducing them as the last fish in the aquarium can help minimise territorial disputes.

Perfect for Large Reef and Display Tanks:

The Sohal Tang is a striking addition to large reef and display aquariums, offering both aesthetic appeal and functionality. Its bold colouration, active swimming, and algae-grazing habits make it a valuable and eye-catching species for advanced marine setups.
