Why Choose the Tiger Jawfish (Opistognathus randalli)?

The Tiger Jawfish is a standout addition to any reef aquarium, offering a combination of striking colouration and fascinating natural behaviour. Its burrowing and perching habits provide endless entertainment, making it a joy to observe. Peaceful by nature, the Tiger Jawfish is ideal for community reef tanks with similarly calm tank mates. Its hardy nature ensures it thrives in well-maintained aquariums with stable water conditions.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are crucial for this sensitive species.
  • Feeding: Tiger Jawfish are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet. Offer live or frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 1-2 times daily in small portions.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank with a deep sandy substrate (at least 3-4 inches) and rubble to allow the Tiger Jawfish to construct its burrow. A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a single jawfish. Ensure the tank has a secure lid, as they are known to jump.
  • Behaviour: Tiger Jawfish are peaceful and thrive in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. They spend much of their time near their burrows, displaying natural behaviours that add a unique dynamic to the aquarium.

Perfect for Reef and Community Tanks:

The Tiger Jawfish is an excellent addition to reef and community tanks, offering vibrant colouration, peaceful behaviour, and engaging burrowing habits. Its unique appearance and personality make it a rewarding choice for aquarists.
