Why Choose the Tuxedo Hogfish (Bodianus bilunulatus)?

The Tuxedo Hogfish is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a hardy and visually striking fish for their marine aquarium. Its bold transformation from juvenile to adult, combined with its active and inquisitive nature, makes it a standout addition. This species thrives in fish-only or predator tanks, where it can interact with similarly robust tank mates. The Tuxedo Hogfish’s resilience and striking appearance make it a rewarding and captivating fish for experienced aquarists.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Efficient filtration and regular water changes are essential for maintaining water quality.
  • Feeding: Tuxedo Hogfish are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet. Offer high-quality marine pellets, frozen foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. Feed 2-3 times daily to ensure proper growth and health.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a tank of at least 125 gallons with plenty of rockwork for hiding and exploration. This species is an active swimmer and requires ample space to move around freely. A secure lid is recommended, as hogfish are known to jump.
  • Behaviour: Tuxedo Hogfish are semi-aggressive and best kept with similarly sized, robust tank mates. They are not suitable for reef tanks due to their tendency to eat invertebrates like shrimp and small crabs. Their curious and bold nature adds energy and interest to the aquarium.

Perfect for Fish-Only and Predator Tanks:

The Tuxedo Hogfish is a dynamic and visually striking addition to fish-only and predator tanks. Its bold colours, active swimming, and hardy nature make it a standout choice for aquarists seeking a unique and robust species.
