Recognised for its streamlined grey to bluish body, accented by a white or pale streak near its tail, this tang is both visually appealing and functional in a reef or fish-only setup. Native to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and surrounding regions, the Vampire Tang is known for its grazing habits, helping to keep algae under control. Why Choose Vampire Tang (Acanthurus tennentii)?

The Vampire Tang is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a large and dynamic fish to enhance their marine aquarium. Its graceful movements and ability to control algae make it both a functional and ornamental addition to any tank. While generally peaceful with other species, its semi-aggressive nature means it thrives best in tanks with ample space to minimise territorial disputes. The Vampire Tang’s hardy nature and stunning appearance make it a rewarding choice for marine enthusiasts who can meet its care requirements.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature of 75°F - 82°F (24°C - 28°C), pH between 8.1 - 8.4, and salinity levels of 1.023 - 1.025. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are crucial to maintain optimal water quality.
  • Feeding: Vampire Tangs are primarily herbivorous and require a diet rich in algae-based foods such as nori, spirulina, and seaweed sheets. Supplement their diet with high-quality marine pellets, flakes, and occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a spacious tank of at least 125 gallons to accommodate their active swimming behaviour and territorial tendencies. Include plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat. Strong water flow is beneficial for their health and comfort.
  • Behaviour: Vampire Tangs are semi-aggressive and may become territorial toward other tangs or similar-shaped fish, especially in smaller tanks. They coexist well with other peaceful marine species and are best introduced as the last tang in the tank to minimise aggression.

Perfect for Large Reef and Marine Display Tanks:

The Vampire Tang is a versatile and eye-catching addition to marine aquariums, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. Its algae-grazing habits and graceful swimming make it ideal for large reef setups and fish-only systems where its dynamic presence can be fully appreciated.
