Discus, scientifically known as Symphysodon spp., are often referred to as the "king of the aquarium" due to their regal appearance, vibrant colours, and graceful swimming. Native to the slow-moving waters of the Amazon River basin in South America, these cichlids are known for their distinctive round, disc-like shape and stunning variety of colours, ranging from deep blues and brilliant reds to striking yellows and intricate patterns. Discus are highly sought after by aquarists for their beauty and are often kept in specialised setups that showcase their elegance. While they are slightly more demanding in terms of care, the rewards of keeping Discus are unmatched, making them a centrepiece in any freshwater aquarium.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Symphysodon spp.
  • Size: Typically grows up to 6-8 inches in diameter
  • Diet: Omnivorous; enjoys a varied diet of high-quality discus pellets, flakes, and regular feedings of live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, and Stendker beef heart
  • Temperament: Peaceful; best kept in groups with other Discus or similarly peaceful, slow-moving fish
  • Habitat: Prefers spacious tanks with plenty of vertical swimming space, soft substrates, and well-planted areas with gentle water flow
  • Care Level: Advanced; suitable for experienced aquarists due to their specific water quality and temperature requirements

Why Choose Discus Fish?

Discus fish are a top choice for aquarists seeking to create a stunning, high-end display aquarium. Their wide range of colours and patterns make them a visually striking addition, and their gentle, slow-moving nature adds a calming presence to any tank. While they do require more specialised care, including very stable water conditions and higher temperatures, their beauty and the sense of achievement in keeping them make them a favourite among dedicated aquarists. Discus are best kept in groups of five or more, where they can display their natural social behaviours and truly thrive.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters: Maintain very stable water conditions with a temperature of 82°F - 86°F (28°C - 30°C), pH between 6.0 - 7.0, and soft, slightly acidic water. Regular water changes and high-quality filtration are crucial to maintaining the health of Discus.
  • Feeding: Discus are omnivorous and should be provided with a varied diet that includes high-quality discus pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, and Stendker beef heart. Feeding small amounts multiple times a day can help them maintain their health and vibrant colours.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a large, well-maintained tank of at least 55 gallons (200 Litres), with soft, sandy or fine-gravel substrate and plenty of vertical space for swimming. Include a mix of live plants, driftwood, and rocks to create a natural environment and offer hiding spots. Ensure gentle water flow to mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress.
  • Behaviour: Discus are peaceful and do best when kept in groups, as they are social fish that thrive on interaction with their own kind. They can be shy, so tank mates should be chosen carefully—opt for other calm, slow-moving fish that won’t outcompete them for food or stress them. Tetras, Rams, Plecos and Angels are all good compatible tankmates.

Perfect for Show Tanks and Dedicated Aquarists:

Discus are ideal for aquarists who are looking to create a show-stopping display aquarium. Their elegant movements, combined with their stunning colours and patterns, make them the centrepiece of any tank. While they require more care and attention than many other freshwater species, the beauty and satisfaction they bring make them a worthwhile challenge for experienced fish keepers.
