Fungia Coral, commonly known as Plate Coral or Disc Coral, is a distinctive and fascinating LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral that adds a unique aesthetic to any reef aquarium. Known for its solitary, free-living structure and its ability to move across the substrate, Fungia Corals are available in a variety of colours, including vibrant oranges, greens, purples, and even multicoloured varieties. Their flat, circular shape, adorned with fleshy polyps and often adorned with a textured, bumpy surface, makes them a standout feature in any marine setup.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Fungia spp. Tongue Coral
  • Lighting: Moderate to high; thrives under LED, T5, or metal halide lighting
  • Water Flow: Low to moderate; prefers gentle to moderate flow that allows its polyps to extend without being disturbed
  • Placement: Bottom of the tank; typically placed directly on the substrate or sand bed
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; grows outward in a circular pattern, expanding over time
  • Compatibility: Peaceful; does not typically have aggressive tendencies but should be placed away from corals with long sweeper tentacles

Why Choose Fungia Coral?

Fungia Coral is highly valued by reef enthusiasts for its unique appearance and interesting behaviour. Unlike many corals that require attachment to rock work, Fungia Corals are free-living, making them a dynamic and engaging addition to your reef. Their bright colours and unusual, plate-like shape add a new dimension to your aquarium's design. Additionally, Fungia Corals are relatively hardy and can adapt to a variety of tank conditions, making them suitable for aquarists of all experience levels.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters:

Temperature - 24°C-26°C

Salinity - 1.022-1.026

Alkalinity - 8-9dKH

Nitrate - 2-15ppm

Phosphate - 0.03-0.10ppm

Calcium - 450ppm

Magnesium - 1400ppm

  • Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Fungia Corals benefit from supplemental feeding with meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or coral-specific foods. Direct feeding helps support their growth and maintain vibrant colours.
  • Placement Considerations: Fungia Corals should be placed on a soft substrate or sand bed where they can freely expand and move. Avoid placing them on sharp or abrasive surfaces that could damage their tissue.

Perfect for All Reef Aquarists:

Fungia Coral is an excellent choice for aquarists who want to add a visually striking and low-maintenance coral to their reef tank. Its peaceful nature and adaptability make it suitable for a wide range of reef environments, from beginner setups to more complex, established systems.
