Lobophyllia Coral, often referred to as Lobed Brain Coral, is a stunning and hardy LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral that makes a captivating addition to any reef aquarium. Known for its large, fleshy polyps and striking colouration, which can include shades of red, pink, green, and blue, Lobophyllia is a favourite among both beginner and experienced aquarists. Its bold, lobed structure adds depth and texture to your reef, creating a visually dynamic display that draws the eye.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Lobophyllia spp.
  • Lighting: Moderate; thrives under LED, T5, or metal halide lighting
  • Water Flow: Moderate; prefers a gentle to moderate current to keep its fleshy polyps fully expanded
  • Placement: Lower to middle regions of the tank; needs a stable base where it can spread and grow
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; develops into large, intricate colonies over time
  • Compatibility: Generally peaceful, but should be kept at a distance from aggressive corals to avoid damage from sweeper tentacles

Why Choose Lobophyllia Coral?

Lobophyllia Coral is prized for its vibrant colours and ease of care, making it an ideal choice for aquarists who want to add a splash of colour and texture to their reef tank. Its resilience makes it suitable for a variety of tank setups, including those maintained by hobbyists who are still perfecting their coral-keeping skills. The Lobophyllia's ability to thrive in a range of conditions also makes it a versatile and reliable addition to your coral collection.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters:

Temperature - 24°C-26°C

Salinity - 1.022-1.026

Alkalinity - 8-9dKH

Nitrate - 2-15ppm

Phosphate - 0.03-0.10ppm

Calcium - 450ppm

Magnesium - 1400ppm

  • Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Lobophyllia benefits from regular feedings with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or formulated coral foods, which can enhance its growth and colouration.
  • Fragging: Lobophyllia corals can be fragged, but care must be taken due to their large, fleshy polyps. Only experienced aquarists should attempt to frag these corals to ensure their health and recovery.

Ideal for All Reef Enthusiasts:

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced reef keeper, Lobophyllia Coral is a versatile and rewarding choice. Its vibrant colours and intriguing structure make it a standout piece in any reef aquarium, while its hardy nature ensures it will thrive with proper care.
