Psammocora Coral, often referred to as Sandpaper Coral due to its textured surface, is a unique and hardy SPS (Small Polyp Stony) coral that adds a distinct look to any reef tank. Known for its encrusting or plating growth patterns, Psammocora can develop into various shapes, including mounds, plates, or thick encrustations that cover rock work. This coral is available in a range of colours, from earthy browns and greens to more vibrant hues like yellows and pinks. Its resilience and ease of care make it a great choice for both beginner and experienced reef keepers looking to diversify their coral collection.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Psammocora spp. "Monster Jam"
  • Lighting: Moderate to high; thrives under LED, T5, or metal halide lighting
  • Water Flow: Moderate to high; prefers steady, moderate currents that help maintain its health and promote growth
  • Placement: Middle to upper regions of the tank; adaptable to a variety of placements, often encrusting over rock work or forming plates
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; forms encrusting mats or plates that can spread over surfaces, creating a visually appealing landscape
  • Compatibility: Peaceful; generally non-aggressive and can coexist well with other corals, though care should be taken to avoid overly aggressive neighbours

Why Choose Psammocora Coral?

Psammocora Coral is a fantastic addition to any reef aquarium, offering both unique texture and colour. Its ability to encrust or plate over rock work makes it a versatile coral for aquascaping, allowing reef keepers to create interesting and natural-looking structures in their tanks. Psammocora is known for its hardiness, making it an excellent choice for those new to SPS corals or for experienced aquarists looking to add a low-maintenance yet visually striking coral to their setup. Its peaceful nature and adaptability to various tank conditions further enhance its appeal.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters:

Temperature - 24°C-26°C

Salinity - 1.022-1.026

Alkalinity - 8-9dKH

Nitrate - 2-15ppm

Phosphate - 0.03-0.10ppm

Calcium - 450ppm

Magnesium - 1400ppm

  • Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Psammocora Corals can benefit from occasional supplemental feedings with small particulate foods such as phytoplankton or coral-specific diets, especially in low-nutrient systems.
  • Placement Considerations: Psammocora is adaptable to various light and flow conditions, but it tends to thrive best in areas with moderate to high flow and lighting. It should be placed where it can grow without being overshadowed by larger corals.

Perfect for All Reef Aquariums:

Psammocora Coral is ideal for reef keepers looking to add a unique and resilient coral to their tank. Its encrusting or plating growth form, combined with its easy-care requirements, makes it a versatile and rewarding coral for any reef environment.
