Hammer Coral, known scientifically as Euphyllia ancora or Euphyllia parancora, is a standout LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral that brings movement and colour to any reef aquarium. Named for its unique hammer or anchor-shaped tentacles, this coral is a favourite among aquarists for its vibrant colours, which can range from shades of green, brown, and gold to more exotic hues like purple-tipped or bicolour varieties. Its sweeping tentacles create a captivating, flowing effect, adding both beauty and motion to your underwater world.

Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Euphyllia ancora / Euphyllia parancora
  • Lighting: Moderate; thrives under LED, T5, or metal halide lighting
  • Water Flow: Moderate; prefers a gentle to moderate current that allows its polyps to sway without being stressed
  • Placement: Lower to middle regions of the tank; needs ample space to grow and expand its sweeping tentacles
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; develops into large, branching colonies over time
  • Compatibility: Docile; doesn’t usually sting other corals

Why Choose Hammer Coral?

Hammer Coral is prized for its striking appearance and the dynamic movement it brings to reef aquariums. Its fleshy, tentacle-like polyps create a soft flowing motion in the water, making it a focal point in any tank. Despite its impressive presence, Hammer Coral is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both intermediate and advanced aquarists.

Care Tips:

  • Water Parameters:

Temperature - 24°C-26°C

Salinity - 1.022-1.026

Alkalinity - 8-9dKH

Nitrate - 2-15ppm

Phosphate - 0.03-0.10ppm

Calcium - 450ppm

Magnesium - 1400ppm

  • Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Hammer Corals benefit from supplemental feedings with meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods.
  • Placement Considerations: They thrive in areas with moderate flow and lighting, where their tentacles can sway gently.

Perfect for Intermediate and Advanced Reef Aquarists:

Hammer Corals are ideal for those who have some experience with reef-keeping and are looking to add a unique and visually striking coral to their collection. Their ability to create motion in the tank, combined with their bold colours, makes them a centrepiece in any reef aquarium.
